Delayed Baggage: How to File a Claim and Get Essentials

When your checked bag fails to appear on the belt the first move is still the same. Stay in the arrivals area and head to the airline baggage service desk before you leave the airport. Report the delay right away and ask them to open a Property Irregularity Report. That form creates the official record and gives you a reference number you will need for tracking and any later claims.

Describe the bag clearly and give the address where it should be delivered once it turns up. Keep the baggage tag stubs and boarding pass with you. Ask the agent about temporary expenses while the bag is missing. Most airlines will cover reasonable costs for essentials such as toiletries, underwear or a basic change of clothes. There is no fixed daily limit in many places so the key is keeping it practical and holding onto every receipt.

Once you have the reference number you can follow the bag online. A good number of delayed bags reappear within a day or two and get delivered free of charge. In the meantime buy only what you truly need and photograph the receipts. If the delay stretches longer the same reference lets you check progress and push for updates.

When the bag finally arrives you usually have a set window to claim the interim expenses. On international routes that window is often twenty-one days from the moment the bag is made available to you. Submit the claim in writing with the PIR number, copies of your tickets, the list of purchases and the original receipts. Some carriers also refund the original baggage fee if the delay is considered significant.

If nothing happens after you send the claim follow up with the airline in writing and keep copies of every message. Acting at the airport and documenting the small purchases from the start makes the reimbursement process far smoother later on.
